Teaching Philosophy
Beyond drumming, I believe that learning music is a journey of self-discovery—and the drumbeat brings us closer to true spiritual awakening. My teaching is grounded in this belief.
Each student begins by sharing their personal background and goals for taking percussion lessons. From there, I create a personalized curriculum that may incorporate cultural elements from their past, allowing space for the inner child—our most creative and free self—to guide their musical growth.
For adult learners or those taking lessons for enrichment, this journey is about creativity, expression, and joy. Practicing is encouraged but never required—music should be nourishing, not stressful. Between weekly lessons, I provide supplemental instructional videos via Google Drive to help reinforce what we explore together.
For serious students—especially teens preparing for undergraduate music programs—we take a more intensive, structured path. Together, we will:
-
Develop strong technique and musicality across multiple percussion instruments
-
Prepare audition materials tailored to summer festival and college-level entrance requirements
-
Build confidence and artistry through fall and spring student recitals
-
Gain a deep understanding of various musical cultures, anti-racism, and mental wellness
Lessons are held in my Harlem-based percussion studio or virtually for long distance students.
